The City of West Torrens provides a waste and recycling bin with a yellow lid to each household. This bin is collected weekly and has a divider to separate general waste from recyclables.
For information on which day waste and recycling is collected from your street, or if you have a bin maintenance or replacement request, contact Solo Resource Recovery - telephone 8295 5077.
Using this bin system diverts tonnes of material from landfill. These materials are recycled into new products such as plastic outdoor furniture, paper and cardboard packaging.
Materials to put in the recycle side of your bin:
• Glass bottles and jars
• Milk and juice cartons
• Aluminium cans
• Steel cans
• Aerosol cans and foils
• Plastic milk and juice bottles
• Soft drink bottles
• Detergent bottles
• Newspapers, magazines and advertising materials
• Cardboard boxes
• Letters, office paper, envelopes and school exercise books
• Telephone books
Many households have a green organic waste bin with a green lid to dispose of garden waste and clippings. This bin is collected on a fortnightly cycle on the same day as the waste and recycling bin. For more information on collection times, please contact Solo Resource Recovery - telephone 8295 5077. The organic material collected from your bin is recycled at a facility and made into rich compost for agricultural use.
The following materials can be placed in the green organics bin:
• Grass clippings
• Branches - no longer than 300mm and
no thicker than 100mm
• Garden prunings
• Leaves
• Cut flowers.
A hard waste collection service is provided for residents on an annual basis. You will receive a notice in your letterbox prior to the next hard waste collection.
Hard waste includes items that are too large to dispose of in your waste and recycling bin – old furniture, electrical equipment, hardware, timber etc.
Hard waste can also be disposed of at the following locations:

Built in 1842 by Sir John Morphett – one of Adelaide’s founding fathers. Five generations of the Morphett family lived in Cummins House until 1977. Now the house and gardens are open for all to enjoy.
The building’s features illustrate how European architecture was adapted to Australian conditions. Many rooms also contain original furniture and antique collections. The gardens are lovingly tendered by volunteers and offer a magnificent display of plant species.
Historic Cummins House is open to the public on the first and third Sunday of each month from 2pm to 4pm.
The modest entry charge includes Devonshire tea and a guided tour of the house, gardens and out-buildings.
The House is a delightful venue for indoor and garden weddings, receptions and engagement parties. The gardens have three areas suitable for outdoor ceremonies with seating available for 50 people. The drawing room can be used for smaller ceremonies with Sir John Morphett’s drawing room a perfect place for signing the register.
Receptions are held in the air-conditioned enclosed courtyard. Formal receptions can be held for up to 65 guests, whilst over 100 can be accommodated for cocktails. Cummins House has an approved list of caterers from which to choose.
The house’s interiors and lavish gardens offer wonderful photographic locations. Power connections are also available in the gardens for the provision of music.
Cummins House is a perfect location for small and medium size functions such as general meetings, reunions, dinners, parties and musical evenings.
The air-conditioned enclosed courtyard is an ideal conference facility with a white board, overhead projector, projection screen and lectern all available for use. Morning and afternoon tea is supplied with approved caterers providing lunch and dinner menus.
The elegant dining room with original table can be used for formal luncheons or dinners for up to twelve guests. Sir John Morphett’s study, drawing room and gardens are also available for use by corporate clients.
