COMMUNITY GARDENING

FERN AVENUE COMMUNITY GARDEN

Tucked away in Fullarton at the site of an old Jam Factory is a garden where local residents grow fruit and vegetables and meet in a straw bale building to learn about organic gardening.

The Fern Avenue Community Garden is owned by the City of Unley who leases the area to local community group, Alternative 3, who pay only a peppercorn rent and manage the running of the site.

Alternative 3 promotes organic gardening and regularly hold courses on the practices of organic gardening. The courses cover a broad range of topics including pest control, plant propagation, soil preparation, composting and companion planting.

Gardeners are asked to refrain from using chemical pesticides or fertilisers in the Fern Avenue Community Garden.

Planting a nature strip

The City of Unley encourages residents beautify the area of land between the footpath edge and the kerb of the road known as the nature strip.

By replacing the dolomite in your nature strip with loam and a variety of plant species you are not only helping to beautify your street, but you are also encouraging birds and butterflies to visit your area.

Plants that are indigenous to Unley that are suitable include:

> Everlasting Daisy (Chrysocephalum apiculatum)
> White Goodenia (Goodenia albiflora)
> Flat Sedge (Cyperus vaginitus)
> Tom Thomb (Diachondra repens)

Other Australian natives or exotic plants that are suitable include:

> Pigface (Carpabrotus chilensis)
> Native fushcia (Correa reflexa)
> Goodenia (Goodenia varia)
> Violet (Viola odorata)
> Roses

The City of Unley can arrange a quote for the removal of the dolomite and the revegetation of your nature strip. It can also offer advice on the selection and maintenance of plants. The cost of this work is approximately is $14 per square metre.

The height of these plants in your nature strip should not exceed 600 mm so as to not affect traffic site lines for cars exiting driveways.

To apply to plant grass in your nature strip you will need to fill in an application to plant grass in your nature strip form and return it to Council offices.

To apply to plant shrubs or ground cover in your nature strip you will need to fill in an application to plant shrubs or ground cover form and return it to Council offices.

If you want to carry out the work yourself, you will be responsible for any underground services that may be in the area. If you convert the nature strip to loam it will be your responsibility to maintain the area

WINDSOR STREET LINEAR RESERVE

The Windsor Street Linear Reserve is a haven for over 9,000 rare and endangered plants that are indigenous to the Unley area.

Many of the plants and trees have been grown from collected seed and cuttings which has enabled them to be replaced in areas where they would have been naturally found.

The established plants and trees now provide seedlings that are planted in other areas. Seedlings from the Grey Germander, a shrub previously only found at the West Terrace Cemetery, have been propagated from the plants in the Reserve and are now providing plants for other areas.

Additional species of rare and endangered plants will be planted as the plants grow and the environment develops

Of the estimated 725 species of plants originally found in the City of Unley 140 are now extinct and 393 are rare or threatened. The Windsor Street Linear Reserve is an opportunity to address the loss of these plants.

COMMUNITY ART

SHOWGROUNDS HIP HOP MURAL

The mural on the western wall of the showgrounds was painted by aerosol artists who had 2,000 square metres to use as their canvas.

Its large and colourful design depicts the history of the Royal Adelaide Show intertwined with images of local hip hop culture.

The mural was commissioned to give young people the opportunity to develop suitable artwork under the direction of an urban artist with the aim of discouraging illegal graffiti.

Aerosol Artist, Paul Alexander, spent seven years designing the mural after leaving art school to pursue his passion and spent ten months painting in all kinds of weather.

His design left spaces for contributing artists who added their own images to create a visually stunning artwork that is seen along the tracks of the Wayville railway station.

FLOODING

The City of Unley has developed a Flood Information Kit and encourages residents to develop their own flood response plan.

Creeks that form part of the Patawolonga Catchment flow through the City of Unley. When it rains, these creeks can be near their capacity, or have reached their capacity, before they reach the Unley section of the creek system, where more water will join its flow and cause flooding.

It does not have to rain in Unley for flooding to occur here. All areas that are near a watercourse or are low lying are at risk of being flooded.

The City of Unley is contained within two water catchment areas the Brownhill Creek Catchment; and the Glen Osmond, Keswick and Parklands Creek Catchment. Each catchment area has a range of land uses that can influence the type of flooding that can occur in different areas.

The heavily vegetated land within the Brownhill Creek Catchment area enables rain to soak into the soil, however, when the soil is saturated, water runs off into small streams that lead to Brownhill Creek. Heavy rainfalls in Brownhill Creek, over a prolonged period, can cause the flow of water to peak and lead to flooding in Unley.

Areas of Unley that could be affected by the Brownhill Creek Catchment include Everard Park; Forestville; Goodwood; Kings Park; Malvern, Millswood; and Unley Park.

The densely developed land in the Glen Osmond, Keswick and Parklands Creek Catchment prohibits rain from soaking into the soil. As rain is not soaked into vegetation, more water from this catchment area runs into creeks.

The storms that can cause major flooding in the Glen Osmond, Keswick and Parklands Creeks involve short periods of heavy rain and if the rain is particularly heavy, flood levels could be reached within 20 minutes.

Areas of Unley that could be affected by the Glen Osmond, Keswick and Parklands Creek Catchment include Fullarton; Forestville; Parkside; Goodwood; Unley and Wayville.

Residents can help prevent properties being flooded by taking these steps

Keep creeks clear of debris

A large proportion of Unley’s creeks are privately owned. If you are the owner of a section of a creek please ensure it is free from debris to assist with preventing your property from being flooded.

If you see debris blocking a public section of a creek (in reserves and parks), please call the City of Unley so that it can be removed. Debris includes large, fallen branches, excessive amounts of leaves and trees growing into or across creek lines.

Sweep up fallen street tree leaves

Residents are encouraged to sweep up fallen street tree leaves and contact the City of Unley and arrange to have them collected.

Arrange a neighbourhood working bee

Work together to clear the creeks, drains and leaves in your area.

Flood Warnings

Flood warnings are issued by the Bureau of Meterology. Warnings are broadcast via radio, television and the Bureau of Meterology website www.bom.gov.au.

The Bureau of Meterology also issues warnings via a telephone service: Land, Weather and Flood Forecasts Ph: 1300 659 215.

The City of Unley has a Joint Flood Response Plan in partnership with the State Emergency Service. In times of flooding both organisations work together to protect the City of Unley and its residents.

For emergency assistance phone the State Emergency Service on 13 25 00, or the City of Unley on 8372 5111.

For after hours assistance phone the Response Team on (Free call) 1800 815 902 or if calling from a mobile phone 0413 449 600.
