THE CITY OF SALISBURY

The City of Salisbury is an area of 161 square kilometres extending from the Para escarpment and the foothills of the Mount Lofty Ranges in the east, to the shores of Gulf St Vincent in the west.

In recent years Salisbury has undergone dramatic change environmentally, economically and socially. This change has nurtured a new generation of pride and identity in the people who live and work in the region.

Salisbury is a truly dynamic city with outstanding assets – world-class electronics research and development centres, a diverse manufacturing base, large exporting businesses engaging in the global economy, and many innovative and entrepreneurial local companies. About 70 per cent of the State’s manufacturing capacity is located in Salisbury, and a major transport hub exists for export businesses.

With a population of around 120,000 people, the City of Salisbury is growing at a faster rate than any other region in South Australia, a trend expected to continue beyond the next decade.

It is a strong educational city boasting a university, TAFE College and some of South Australia’s finest residential developments.

LIBRARIES

Our library service has continued to provide quality recreational and learning opportunities for many Salisbury residents.

Library loans reached an all time high of 1,182,145. Membership increased slightly to 59,980. More than 5,000 children attended our children’s and youth programs.

The range of resources available, in addition to traditional materials, includes free Internet and e-mail services, including wireless access at the Len Beadell branch in Salisbury, DVDs, pedometers, graphic novels and x-boxes in four library branches.

In August, the library service launched its inaugural “One Book One Salisbury” program. The reading program is designed to encourage the whole city to read the one book at the same time.

The library service has also formed a partnership with the City of Playford Library Service and the University of SA Early Childhood Education unit to deliver a program called Books R4 Babies 2. The objective is to encourage parents and caregivers to read to their children on a regular basis, and to ensure that all children learn to read from an early age.

The Salisbury Library Service has many services to offer you, with branches in Salisbury, Para Hills, Salisbury Downs, Ingle Farm and Mawson Lakes.

Please contact us if you need more information on any of our services.

Community Events

This year, Salisbury further extended its program of community events to engage the broader public through the Living City initiative. Aimed at celebrating all that is good about Salisbury, the program was highlighted at the hugely successful large scale community event Living Loud, held this year at Salisbury Oval. The event took a new approach to engaging the community through various interactive come and try activities and was again hosted by Channel 9 personality Rob Kelvin.

Featuring the official unveiling of our local ambassadors, the 2006 Salisbury Living Legends the event drew a record crowd of more than 5000 attendees.

This year, Salisbury also celebrated its fifth On the Fringe Festival - Salisbury’s own month long citywide arts and cultural celebration. Key events included the Film Fiesta, Pulse in the Square music program, art and theatre workshops for young people and the Salisbury North Skate Park event as part of the annual Youth Week festival. Held in April 2006, this program provided a great opportunity for young people in Salisbury to showcase their talents and come together as a community.

Another highly successful event was Wake up the Neighbours, an annual program held at Salisbury North.

In addition, various community groups were provided with funding to hold their own events within the City through the Community Events Sponsorship Grants program.

Celebrating Achievements

The City of Salisbury recognises and celebrates the achievements of its residents.

Various achievements were highlighted through Councils Youth Champions, Learning Champions, Mayoral Achievement for Seniors and Australia Day awards.

During the course of the year, Council produced four editions of its community magazine Salisbury Aware, which is designed to increase pride in the area by showcasing positive stories about local achievements. Council also continued to produce monthly editions of Spirit of Salisbury, profiling high achievers and published in the News Review Messenger.

Promoting Salisbury

Council continued its strong commitment to its marketing initiative to promote the positive aspects of living within this community.

Highlights of the marketing plan included the Salisbury, the Living City program which featured a range of projects to increase community pride, including a larger program of community events and the inaugural Salisbury Living Legends program; promotion of the City’s economic strengths through the Shaping the Future campaign; and City-wide promotion of the region’s environmental efforts Sustaining our City.

Salisbury’s streetscapes and signage also continued to receive a makeover, with the progressive roll-out of new blade street signs, featuring the City of Salisbury logo on most City streets; a total upgrade of the distinct company directional signs that have been a feature of Salisbury for eight years and new reserve and park signs.

WASTE AND RECYCLING SERVICES

Bins

Residents are entitled to a free 140 litre Mobile Garbage Bin (MGB) for general rubbish and a free 240L Recycling bin. These are delivered to your home at no charge, within two to three working days of being requested. Whilst the Greenwaste collection service is free, residents are required to purchase their own bin.

The City of Salisbury has a policy to only issue 140 litre rubbish bins instead of 240 litre bins to encourage residents to use the free Recycling and Greenwaste Services.

If you are a new resident and already have a recycling and waste bin at your property, the City of Salisbury will forward to you a waste collection calendar and greenwaste information.

If you have moved into a newly built house, or if the last resident took the bins, the Council will notify Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority (NAWMA) on your behalf. NAWMA will send out a recycling and a waste bin with information on recycling and greenwaste.

To request your bins and waste collection calendar, please contact the Customer Service Unit on
8406 8222.

The bins remain the property of NAWMA. Residents are required to leave bins at the property when they move (except their greenwaste bin) as the bins are numbered and registered to the property. These registration records are maintained by NAWMA and assist them in locating stolen bins.

The bins are made from 50 per cent new plastic product and 50 per cent recycled plastic.

Residents can changeover to a 240-litre bin for waste if they are willing to pay the appropriate fee. For further information, please contact the Customer Service Staff on 8406 8222.
