COUNCIL RATES – WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?

The City of Marion provides a host of services for the benefit of the community including local roads, libraries, sports grounds, recreation centres, parks, planning and development, playgrounds, waste management, street lighting, as well as supporting individuals and business and community groups.

Before collecting any rates Council first establishes which services will be provided in the next financial year and how much those services are expected to cost. This includes the provision and maintenance of community assets such as infrastructure including local roads and drains. This information is adopted as its budget. Within this budget the amount of money that will be
collected from other sources and from loans is estimated. The Council can then work out how much money must be collected from the community in the form of Council rates to balance its budget. Council meetings are open to the public and the budget is available to the public.

Warriparinga

Warriparinga is a special place in the heart of Marion, significant for its Aboriginal, European and environmental features. It is a spiritually important site for the Kaurna Peoples of the Adelaide Plains. ‘Warri Pari’ means windy place by the river in the Kaurna language. The Warriparinga site is located on a 3.5 hectare reserve on the corner of Sturt and Marion Roads, Sturt (formerly known as Laffer’s Triangle). The Sturt River runs through the reserve, and the winds that come to Warriparinga still speak to the surviving Kaurna Custodians there.

Warriparinga is also the location of the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre, Purrunna Kaurna Munaintya Wodli – an Australian-first Aboriginal Interpretive and cultural renewal project. Funded by the Commonwealth Government through a Centenary of Federation grant of $1.45m, the Centre was developed as a ‘conciliation’ project through the joint partnership of KACHA (the Kaurna Aboriginal Community Heritage Association) and the City of Marion.

Intended to benefit the whole community, this elegant ‘open space museum interprets Kaurna heritage, and fosters arts and cultural activities such as the Full Moon Ceremonies and Friendship Fires. Contact the Centre for details of current programs, including art exhibitions, Kaurna cultural workshops and performances, hire of facilities, education
programs and tours by Kaurna guides.

In 1998 the Warriparinga Wetland was developed to improve the water quality of the Sturt River. The development also provides an attractive open space for recreation, education and the re-establishment of native plants and animals. Water is diverted into the wetland from the Sturt River. After leaving the wetland, water re-enters the Sturt River and eventually drains into the sea through the Patawalonga basin.

Metal interpretive signs are located around the Warriparinga area, highlighting the site’s specific cultural and
environmental features. With plenty of seating available it means there is ample opportunity to sit down, relax and appreciate the area, sites and sounds.

European heritage features include the early colonial Fairford House and Coach House, remnant vineyards and orchard. A bicycle / walking track has also been established around the wetland that joins with other Bikedirect routes.

Parking is available on Sturt Road, next to the Marion Holiday Park or in the area adjacent to the impressive Tjirbruki Gateway by artists Sherry Rankine, Margaret Worth and Gavin Malone. This forest of dead tree trunks tells the story of the ancestral being, Tjirbruki. Enter off Sturt Road to Warriparinga Way,
opposite McInerney Avenue.

Contact the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre, telephone 8357 5900.

Youth Advisory Committee

If you are a young person aged between 12 and 25 years old, passionate about issues affecting young people, would like to have your say about what’s important to you and other young people and would like to make a difference in your community, then Marion’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is the place to start.

YAC meets on the last Wednesday of each month from 6pm until 8pm at the Marion Council Chambers, 245 Sturt Road, Sturt. YAC is open to all young people between the ages of 12 and 25 years old and offers a variety of activities for young people to have their say.

YAC’s mission is to consult with and act as a voice for the diversity of youth, and to encourage and empower the young community.

Some of YAC’s activities have included:
• Organising Youth Week events in the Marion area.
• Assisting the Sturt Road Police and the Office of Liquor and Gaming with the development of an alcohol information wallet card for young people.
• Taking part in Council’s Community Planning Process helping to shape what Marion will look like in the future.
• Assisting with the development of youth services in the Hallett Cove area.
• Organising events to showcase the works of young, new and emerging artists, musicians and film makers.
• Setting up of Special Interest Groups.

YAC is also a great way to meet new friends and learn new skills. Training is provided throughout the year in areas such as public speaking, event management, meeting procedures and working with the media. From time to time YAC members can also take advantage of training offered through the Office for Youth.

Special Interest Groups

Special Interest Groups are another way that young people can get involved in YAC. These groups work on specific projects. They keep YAC informed of their activities and are more hands-on. The individual groups decide how often they will meet and for how long (i.e. 6 months, 12 months, or ongoing). Being a Special Interest Group member does not mean you are required to attend YAC meetings, but if you would like to be a part of both groups, that is also welcomed.

YAC currently has Special Interest Groups in the following areas:
• The Environment
• Venues to play or listen to live music.

For more information about Marion’s Youth Advisory Committee, please contact Sarah Addis on 8375 6879 or email sarah.addis@marion.sa.gov.au or yac@marion.sa.gov.au
